The Importance of Our Early Years
How childhood experiences shape our emotional wellbeing, relationships and self-worth in adulthood
How Early Experiences Shape Us
The First Five Years
The ‘Shaping Us’ campaign, led by the Princess of Wales, highlights the crucial importance of a child’s first five years. Research from The Centre of Early Childhood shows that many adults underestimate just how significant these early experiences are.
As the Princess of Wales explained:
“The way we develop through our experiences, relationships and surroundings during our early childhood fundamentally shapes our whole lives.”
Our early relationships influence how we form connections, manage stress, see ourselves and relate to others throughout adulthood.
Why Early Years Matter
A safe, loving and secure environment between the ages of 0–5 lays the foundation for emotional wellbeing. When those needs are not consistently met, children may grow into adults struggling with low self-esteem, anxiety, depression or difficulty trusting others — often without fully understanding why.
It is important to recognise that children are never responsible for meeting their own emotional needs. If those needs were unmet, it was not a failure on their part.
Reclaiming Self-Worth
Talking about early experiences and making sense of how they have shaped you can be the first step towards rebuilding self-esteem and self-worth.
Being encouraged to express feelings from a young age can significantly reduce the number of adults who later struggle with feeling unheard, anxious or emotionally disconnected. Understanding your story allows you to respond to yourself with compassion rather than blame.
